It's been the word at the bars for a few weeks; If the Astros sign Carlos Beltran, Roger "The Rocket" Clemens will re sign to pitch with the Houston Astros, as a higher up in the Astros org has let slip. I'd consider that a gauntlet thrown. Clemens has a personal services contract with the club, so he doesn't have to work if he doesn't want to.
For years fans in Houston have felt like as soon as a star is developed or one has been traded for, they leave A.S.A.P. The Astros po'boy it most of the time. The Astros have never been in the 'Big Boys Club.' But you hear frequently how high the payrole is and how bad attendance is! Hell, they change colors or logos almost every year. They charge out the ass for refreshments...hot beer and cold dogs! The servicing vendors that provide the food don't give a flying flip how long you've been in line waiting for them either! My experieince has been that they're there grudgingly when they could be home collecting welfare at near the wage they make selling peanuts and drinks. $6.50 for a bag of peanuts, a small bag. The Reliant has been sold out most games because of Clemens...and Pettitte.
So, will the Astros & Drayton McLane do what it takes to get and keep a super star like Beltran knowing that Clemens will pitch again if they do, AND Pettitte will be healthy next year as well?
No.
